Two New eBooks Coming Out to Support Literacy at a Local Elementary School~One Written by 8th Grade Students

As our mission statement confirms, our goal is to share the good in education.  Given that our company is not even a year old, we have donated most of our time and talent to giving back and trying to make a difference in some of our local schools.

One of the schools we have taken under our wing to support, is St. Mary Elementary School in Royal Oak, Michigan.  It is a sweet little school with a diverse population striving to meet the needs of all students in a 21st century fashion.  They love to collaborate and every time an idea is given they are open to explore the possibilities.

"All Around our Town" Written by Denise Ball, Trisha Vaughn and Sue Atwell from Unlock the Teacher and all Proceeds Donated to St. Mary School in Royal Oak, Michigan to Promote Literacy

Last March, Unlock the Teacher LLC donated “All Around our Town” to St. Mary’s.   This academic eBook is aligned with K-2 National Social Studies Standards and places emphasis on sight words. Along with coloring pages, this 23 page eBook also includes a Parent/Teacher Resource Section.  All proceeds from this eBook goes towards promoting literacy in St. Mary School.

"Building Blocks of our Nation" written by St. Mary School's 8th Grade Class 2012 in Royal Oak, Michigan

This month, the 8th grade class has been studying the Core Democratic Values.  Their teacher, Mrs. Linda Irwin, utilizing Gardner’s Multiple Intelligence Theory, had students work in groups and create  Lego models representing  researched documents and the Core Democratic Values of our country.

We are excited to announce that both books will be available at Barnes and Noble and Amazon this month.

It is  exciting for us to see students get so excited about their curriculum, that they want to write and share it with others.  This is why we love to go into schools and share with teachers and students the eBooks process. It is a win-win for students, teachers and school; a positive synergistic process!

Stay tuned as we announce more eBooks we have been working on and our plan for book I in our Unlock the Teacher series.

May we continue to seek knowledge in all things,

Denise

Please check out our website for additional information: www.unlocktheteacher.com

We love hearing from you and sharing your ideas too.  We are creating a massive resource section on our website for educational and non-profit grants.  We will be launching this information in April.  If you or your school has a great Best Practice to share or is in need of information, we would love to hear from you.  It is through the sharing of knowledge and positive collaboration, that we will create a better tomorrow for our children, our future!

May we seek knowledge in all things,

ePublishing Teen Workshops in Schools This Week Went Great and Were Inspirational

Our Unlock the Teacher LLC ePublishing Teen Workshops in Schools This Week Went Great and Were Inspirational!  We have had such a great time this week going into schools, talking and working with teenagers about how to utilize their great ideas and talents to earn college money.  There are so many successful teen authors out there.  The groups we met with shared books they are reading or have read and were amazed that some of them were written by teens.

When we brought up the Eragon series, each school group cheered or expressed loudly their love for this series.  Out of hundreds of teens, only a handful knew Christopher Paolini history and how as a teenager he wrote EragonTeenReads.com  is just one of many sites we recommend in our workshops, for teenagers to seek out information on their favorite authors. Author Ashley is another great example we use to demonstrate how teenagers can turn their crazy dreams, ideas and thoughts into eBooks and be successful.  One of the neatest pieces to Ashley Author’s story is that her whole family participates in the process…much like Christopher Paolini family.

In our community ePub workshops or small group workshops the parent-child collaboration seems to draw huge interest.  We are currently working with a principal who loves the teen/parent workshop idea and we are developing a workshop specifically tailored to his audience in his district.  Children have great ideas and if we only pause and listen, there is much we can learn from them.

Speaking of learning, one K-2 group that we met with this week were so cute but so full of ideas that after our eBook Reading Workshop, we met as a team and wrote down some of their ideas that we could use…a plethora of great ideas from wise children under the age of 8!  This is a great reminder that we should always seek knowledge… if open to it, it can come from the least expected places and people.

More to come as I begin to write down these great ideas from children to share.

Knowledge is meant to be shared…may we seek it and share it!

Denise 🙂

P.S. If your child or classroom has a good idea and you would like to share with us and our readers, we would love to read it!

“All Around our Town” to Launch the 1st of March in 2011 for Unlock the Teacher LLC Promoting Literacy Campaign

My community has many beautiful parks.

All proceeds from the eBook for  “All Around our Town”  will be donated to St. Mary’s School in Royal Oak, Michigan.  This school has a wonderful curriculum plan that incorporates art and reading across the curriculum.  The art teachers exhibits a passion for her craft and enjoys showcasing the many beautiful art projects created by her students. The 7th and 8th graders are so well read in this building, I enjoy stopping in to ask them what they are reading and why.  Unlock the Teacher LLC can not wait to see what wonderful ways this building will utilize our gift.

Given that the Common Core State Standards Initiative rolls out in 2012, if your district or school is in need of some curriculum assistance, please visit our website for more information.  We have a proven track record, a workable, teacher friendly model and positive references  from educators, administrators and district level personnel.  Teachers’ most important job is educating our future, our children.  One role we feel at Unlock the Teacher LLC is vital to our mission, is to be a resource for our fellow teachers.  We go in buildings, look at current curriculum, incorporate new CCSS through collaboration and facilitating workshops to allow the educational staff to focus on the learning process  in the classroom.  Many feel that educators should be able to teach eight hours, go home and grade papers for two-four more hours, write lesson plans and somehow find time for their families.  Then, on top of that, we expect them to stay motivated, current and differentiate to meet the needs of all learners.  We are blessed in this country that there are so many educators who are able to do all these tasks and make it work for all stake holders.  However, there are many studies that speak to the high “burn-out” rate for teachers.  Unlock the Teacher, LLC goal is to be a resource for many and an aid to allow educators to focus on what is most important, preparing our children for the future. Wow, I guess I had more in me today then I realized.  I will now jump off my soap box now and encourage everyone to seek knowledge in all things! ~Denise 🙂
