A-M-A-Z-I-N-G Things Happening @ Unlock the Teacher

Dear Unlock the Teacher Friends,

I have been offered and accepted a position as Assistant Principal at St. Regis School in Bloomfield Twp, Michigan.  It is a wonderful school and I am thrilled to work in an environment where education is paramount! I am excited to join an educational team where the educators embrace technology and differential learning. I will continue to hold my seat on the Birmingham Public Schools Education Council, where I enjoy discussing curriculum and collaborating with educational leaders and parents in the local area.

My position as CEO at Unlock the Teacher will not change, as we continue to write and develop training for students and teachers.  Trisha, Sue and I will continue to write and plan out new academic eBooks (we are working on three right now) and Sue will continue to create amazing graphics for our clients and produce fabulous commercials. Our next professional development for educators is in  January for one of the BPS Public Schools, topic is “You Make a Difference”.

We are thrilled to announce, that we have completed our 15 month process of writing book I in our series for teachers and parents with Dr. David Lick, MD, Beaumont Hospitals and Dr. Joslen Letscher, Ph.D, University of Detroit Mercy professor. The parent and educator sample group blessed off on our draft and the graphics are AMAZING! We will be sending our proposal out to agents and publishers alike the first week of January before we head to the Writer’s Digest Writing Conference 2012 in New York, Jan. 21-23.  We enjoy this conference for the collaboration that occurs among writers of all genres and the education obtained in the workshops are so beneficial.

We would love to share the good happening in your school, please let us know at denise@unlocktheteacherllc.com.

May we continue to seek knowledge in all things,

Denise

Two New eBooks Coming Out to Support Literacy at a Local Elementary School~One Written by 8th Grade Students

As our mission statement confirms, our goal is to share the good in education.  Given that our company is not even a year old, we have donated most of our time and talent to giving back and trying to make a difference in some of our local schools.

One of the schools we have taken under our wing to support, is St. Mary Elementary School in Royal Oak, Michigan.  It is a sweet little school with a diverse population striving to meet the needs of all students in a 21st century fashion.  They love to collaborate and every time an idea is given they are open to explore the possibilities.

"All Around our Town" Written by Denise Ball, Trisha Vaughn and Sue Atwell from Unlock the Teacher and all Proceeds Donated to St. Mary School in Royal Oak, Michigan to Promote Literacy

Last March, Unlock the Teacher LLC donated “All Around our Town” to St. Mary’s.   This academic eBook is aligned with K-2 National Social Studies Standards and places emphasis on sight words. Along with coloring pages, this 23 page eBook also includes a Parent/Teacher Resource Section.  All proceeds from this eBook goes towards promoting literacy in St. Mary School.

"Building Blocks of our Nation" written by St. Mary School's 8th Grade Class 2012 in Royal Oak, Michigan

This month, the 8th grade class has been studying the Core Democratic Values.  Their teacher, Mrs. Linda Irwin, utilizing Gardner’s Multiple Intelligence Theory, had students work in groups and create  Lego models representing  researched documents and the Core Democratic Values of our country.

We are excited to announce that both books will be available at Barnes and Noble and Amazon this month.

It is  exciting for us to see students get so excited about their curriculum, that they want to write and share it with others.  This is why we love to go into schools and share with teachers and students the eBooks process. It is a win-win for students, teachers and school; a positive synergistic process!

Stay tuned as we announce more eBooks we have been working on and our plan for book I in our Unlock the Teacher series.

May we continue to seek knowledge in all things,

Denise

centers on identifying appropriate and inappropriate behavior associated with bullying.  Presentation covers how to communicate when involved in or witnessing this behavior. Problem solving tips are given to help with future anti-bullying success. Students create as a group the “Don’t Be a Bully Three B’s Please” chart. (e.g. 1. Don’t be a bully “B”ecause…it makes you feel bad inside!) If time permits, students are encouraged to participate in impromptu skits and role-play scenarios. (Students usually love this portion.)

“Words, Action, Character”.  Students will identify words that empower the slogan created and words that destroy its meaning.

Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and Student Workshop Responses Have Been Great…Thank You!

Response to our Common Core State Standards Workshops has Been Amazingly Successful…Thank You!

Unlock the Teacher workshop pictures in schools for the 2010/2011 School Year

Although we worked in schools this past school year 2010/2011 to help align building curriculum to the Common Core State Standards , since we posted our workshops to prepare our calendar for next school year, the response has been amazing!  We are thrilled with the response and inquiring emails are great…we are happy to answer any questions and we work with all schools to include but not limited to public, private and charter.

On this blog alone, we are averaging 40-100 views a day for our workshops and our subscriptions for our blog have doubled.

As we continue to prepare for next year’s schedule, we are also finishing up a few academic eBooks.

We are also finishing up a year’s worth of research, needs assessments and writing…many months of collaborating with  Dr. David Lick, Associate Professor, Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine and Assistant Clinical Professor, Wayne State University School of Medicine and Dr. Joslen Letscher, Professor at the University of Detroit Mercy.  We are hoping to send proposals to publishers for this project in September.

Outside of our Common Core State Standards Workshops another hot topic of inquiry from our readers is our Anti-Bullying Workshops.  Brief examples of these workshops will be posted soon.

The positive responses from educators has been so rewarding, as they are my colleagues. To have such great emails commenting that you like what we are trying to do is very humbling and synergistic.

We appreciate all the emails, comments and questions.  We are also trying to write grants now to be able to provide workshops for those schools who have asked but cannot afford it for their staff or students.

Thank you!

May we continue to seek knowledge in all things,

Denise and the Unlock the Teacher Team

Workshop with Teens Produces a Great Insight into What They are Reading This Summer…Grisham, Patterson, Zusak, Riordan and Horowitz Were the Top Author Contenders

I met with a group of teens a few weeks back and asked them if they would like to share with all of our readers, the books they are currently reading and will read this summer.  The following is a list of books they provided.  I enjoyed teaching middle school and it is always refreshing to meet with young people and actually l-i-s-t-e-n to what they have to say or share.  This group of teens were articulate about their futures, the future of our country and the role they see themselves in helping make our world better.

So this is a shout out to that group of young people (that worked with Mrs. Ball ;-)), with whom I have no doubt will be amazing leaders of tomorrow. Acte non verbe!

Workshop Reveals What Teens are Reading

"Wolf Brother" by Michelle Paver was one of the group's favorites!

Grisham and Patterson were hot favorites for girls and boys.

"The Book Thief" by Zusak is an amazing read...highly recommend for literature teachers everywhere! Denise 😉

The whole team at Unlock the Teacher LLC is looking forward to an exciting teaching year with schools around the United States (and possibly abroad)…stay tuned as we will continually share what our children, our future is reading.  What we allow into our minds plays an important role of what and who we become, regardless of age!

May we continue to seek knowledge in all things,

Denise 😉
