Zondervan…A Great Educational Site for all Stakeholders in the Life of a Child

As educators we are always looking for good material and strategies to share that will help our parents (the first responders) and teachers be more effective in the life of a child.  Each child is special and unique, so we try to find educational tools to address all learning styles.

This morning, I stumbled upon a site/company that I had forgotten about.  I utilized some of Zondervan‘s products in the classroom many moons ago and somehow I forgot how positive some of their products were for students of all ages.

Zondervan has company values that promote positive character development…refreshing! At Unlock the teacher, we are all about promoting the good…good in ourselves and others; we love this list of values that Zondervan promotes.

OUR VALUES

Integrity — We maintain high ethical and moral standards in speech and in personal and professional conduct.

Initiative — We are willing and empowered to proactively contribute to the success of the company, its customers, and other employees.

Excellence — We give our personal best.

Innovation — We seek out new possibilities in every area and embrace ground-breaking change that adds value.

Respect — We have as much consideration for the personal and professional worth and dignity of others as we do for ourselves.

Accountability — We are responsible for our own actions and answerable to others.

At a time where children, parents and teachers are all trying to find words of inspiration, I am thrilled to offer our readers a look at Zondervan.  If you are like me and new them in the early 90’s, I encourage all stakeholders in the life of a child to take a moment and revisit this company. Zondervan offers book for all ages…us adults too 🙂

Sneak Peak at the Cover for the Third eBook in the “Katie’s Farm Adventures” Series~All Proceeds Go Directly to Elementary School to Promote Literacy

"Katie's Horse Adventure" Book III in the "Katie's Farm Adventures" written and illustrated by a wonderful and creative first grade class...who love to write!

We love going into schools to work with teachers and students.  This year, we have had great experiences working with talented educators wanting to be ahead of the pack and correlate their curriculum to the Common Core State Standards; one year ahead of the CCSSI criteria set.  In fact, the teachers we worked with this year were so excited about the Common Core State Standards, that they not only correlated the Math as expected (one year ahead of schedule) but the ELA as well.  Thank you to all the educators who allowed us to work with them and be apart of the positive synergistic curriculum change for our children, our future!

With this said, out of all of our workshops conducted in schools this past year, from “How to ePublish for Teens” to “Writing Workshops for grades 1-5”, we had so much fun with the OLQM First Grade Class.  We enjoyed each and every workshop and all the excitement that the students brought, specially the teens so excited to learn how to use their writing to benefit their college future.
OLQM was the recipient of Unlock the Teacher LLC’s  first donated eBook  (“Katie’s Farm Adventures“) for the 2010/2011 school year.
The first grade class explained how they were so excited about the book, that they wanted to write another adventure for Katie.  Since January 2011, this first grade class has not only written and illustrated one adventure for Katie, but two”
Katie’s Exploring Adventure and Katie’s Horse AdventureKatie’s Exploring Adventure has received great review(s) from other educators and Katie’s Horse Adventure is due to be published with Barnes and Noble.com by the end of the month.
Unlock the Teacher LLC is thrilled to be a part of this amazing experience and look forward to writing and donating more of our own work to new elementary schools in the upcoming 2011/2012 school year.
On behalf of all the students who will benefit from your eBook purchase, we thank you for promoting literacy!
If your school would like to receive one of our donated eBooks next school year or would like to participate in one of the many workshops we offer, please feel free to email us @ teachme@unlocktheteacherllc.com or visit our website at www.unlocktheteacher.com
Wishing everyone a wonderful weekend,
Denise, Trisha and Sue

ePublishing Teen Workshops in Schools This Week Went Great and Were Inspirational

Our Unlock the Teacher LLC ePublishing Teen Workshops in Schools This Week Went Great and Were Inspirational!  We have had such a great time this week going into schools, talking and working with teenagers about how to utilize their great ideas and talents to earn college money.  There are so many successful teen authors out there.  The groups we met with shared books they are reading or have read and were amazed that some of them were written by teens.

When we brought up the Eragon series, each school group cheered or expressed loudly their love for this series.  Out of hundreds of teens, only a handful knew Christopher Paolini history and how as a teenager he wrote EragonTeenReads.com  is just one of many sites we recommend in our workshops, for teenagers to seek out information on their favorite authors. Author Ashley is another great example we use to demonstrate how teenagers can turn their crazy dreams, ideas and thoughts into eBooks and be successful.  One of the neatest pieces to Ashley Author’s story is that her whole family participates in the process…much like Christopher Paolini family.

In our community ePub workshops or small group workshops the parent-child collaboration seems to draw huge interest.  We are currently working with a principal who loves the teen/parent workshop idea and we are developing a workshop specifically tailored to his audience in his district.  Children have great ideas and if we only pause and listen, there is much we can learn from them.

Speaking of learning, one K-2 group that we met with this week were so cute but so full of ideas that after our eBook Reading Workshop, we met as a team and wrote down some of their ideas that we could use…a plethora of great ideas from wise children under the age of 8!  This is a great reminder that we should always seek knowledge… if open to it, it can come from the least expected places and people.

More to come as I begin to write down these great ideas from children to share.

Knowledge is meant to be shared…may we seek it and share it!

Denise 🙂

P.S. If your child or classroom has a good idea and you would like to share with us and our readers, we would love to read it!

This is a THANK YOU blog for all of you who have so generously responded to our invitation, passed on the word and through your generosity, allowing us to share the good in education.  Our new website @ http://www.unlocktheteacher.com has received over 600 hits in the first week…we have received approximately 30+ emails of comments about our literacy campaign for elementary schools.  The comments about all the art work my mom painted has been both touching and healing for me as well.

Our Unlock the Teacher LLC team is so grateful for the support, the positive comments and the dialogue with local and …not so local school districts about our training packages.  Our “ePublishing Workshop for Teens” is a hot topic and we will post some mini clips of our next workshop this Friday on our website, to share the enthusiasm that young people are having when they see the wonderful opportunities for their writing.  As an educator, it always gives me goose bumps to see students get excited or find validity in the work they produce in the classroom; it is a win-win for educators, students and families.

Recently, our company was asked to provide a min-ePub training for 8 students and parents at a private home.  Everyone in attendance came prepared with laptop and samples of writings: short stories, poetry, cartoons etc.  It was a teachable/learning moment for me as an educator, for the parent realizing the amazing work their children were capable of producing and for the teens as they discovered that their authentic work, their ideas, dreams and creativity were not only good, but inspiring for all the adults in the group.  The coup de grace of the training was when all participant realized the opportunities that were available with ePublishing this authentic work. They discovered, that they could utilize proceeds to  establish college funds, travel adventure funds etc. with publishing authentic, creative and current writings for the reader of today…exciting!

We give our next ePublishing Workshop this Friday to 100+ teens for a local school district, and personally…I cannot wait!

Did you know that the author of that amazing Eragon series was a teen when he published Eragon as an eBook? Of course, Knopf Publishing, a part of Random House, picked it up and signed the whole series within two months. 🙂  An example of “daring to dream” and living intentionally!  A true family affair…

May we continue to seek knowledge in all things…and again we are truly grateful for the support and kind words,

Unlock the Teacher LLC Team
