A Reader Shares Their Favorite Educational Website…Check it Out and Let us Know!

One of our readers would like to share their website.  We love to collaborate and share, so check out this webiste and let us know if it was a good recommendation or not…

Dear Unlock the Teacher Team,

I’d like to share our website brightstorm(www.brightstorm.com). We cover most math, science subjects of junior/senior high students, and are going to expand it to other subjects. We have thousands of free high quality videos for every possible textbook topic and practice problems for every topic will be added this summer, too. Also, we’re now developing a convenient tool for teachers to create supplemental materials using our content. All this is and will be free as far as I know(I’m the CEO….). Seeing my daughter’s math teacher recommended our site during her back to school night presentation, I guess it will be helpful for other teachers and students, too.
Thanks!

Bumsoo

Good luck Bumsoo and  Unlock the Teacher LLC team wishes you much success!  We hope many students prosper because of your efforts.

May we continue to seek knowledge in all things,

Denise and the entire Unlock the Teacher LLC Team

A Review of “The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig” by Eugene Trivizas and Helen Oxenbury

Once they got past their differences, they could be friends...imagine!

Given that my little people are on Spring break, we made the most of it today.  We had a playdate and visited our local library.  Our family just loves the library and views it as a magical place, full of many adventures, just waiting to be explored.  While at the library we discovered that we could check out Wii games…for free and for a few days at a time.  At the same time, I found myself amazed and grateful.

What a wonderful way for audiences young and old to try out new games and new yoga poses for the Wii 🙂 I was so thrilled by this awesome discovery, I felt the need to share it with all of you.

The other treasure we found while at the library, was a book called, The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig, written by Eugene Trivizas and Helen Oxenbury.  My daughter and I shared so many laughs over this tonight.  The vocabulary is excellent; some words were challenging for my daughter to sound out and there were a couple of words she did not know meaning. I utilized these words as great teachable moment tools.

Scholastic offers a free lesson plan for parents and teachers to use with children provided by Michelle Higgens, a third grade teacher.  Given the lexicon used in this book, I would recommend for grades 1-3.  This would be a great resource to use when teaching/discussing bullying and differences with child/student.

I hope everyone runs out to their local library and reads this book…funny, cute and a tool to learn from.

Have a great night and happy reading!

May we continue to seek knowledge in all things,

Denise

A Fabulous Middle School Teacher Utilizing “Out of the Box” Techniques to Teach Peace

A Fabulous Middle School Teacher Steps “Out of the Box” to Teach Peace

Unlock the Teacher Team travels into many schools and I always enjoy going into St. Mary’s School in Royal Oak.  The atmosphere is inviting and the teachers are friendly.  We wanted to tell you about a fabulous teacher utilizing “out of the box” techniques to teach peace. Linda Irwin teaches middle school literature and even if that knowledge wasn’t known, one could tell just by walking into her cozy room!

While visiting this past week, I coud not help noticing this awesome bulletin board as I walked down the hall in front of this classroom.  I walked in and asked Mrs. Irwin all about it.  The students are reading, Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin.

Students are working together by individually designing a quilt square that will be added to a “Quilt of Peace” created by the entire class.  I was fortunate to have witnessed one child designing one of these squares, it was beautifully done.  When asked, the students were so excited to share insights from book and the great discussions they were having in class.

As a certified ELA teacher, whenever I hear students excited about reading, my heart soars!  Great job Mrs. Irwin for passing on you passion and utilizing relevant and current books to engage your students.  Unlock the Teacher LLC salutes you! 🙂

If you ever wonder if middle school and high school students are paying attention to business, politics and world affairs, we are in various schools and take every opportunity to ask students about their thoughts…they are very aware of the world around them… AND they have an opinion.

We will be utilizing the month of April to shower you with Best Practices we find as we wrap up this school year.  If you know a fabulous teacher and want to tell us about it, we will share it and celebrate with you.  We are blessed to have such dedicated educators in this country. Please join us in celebrating their efforts!

May we seek knowledge in all things,

Check Out Two Great Sites for Creating Free Apps

We love sharing the good in education, together we can make a difference!

“Like” Unlock the Teacher on Facebook and while your visiting our new page, check out two new sites we found for creating FREE apps.  When we travel into middle and high schools to teach our “How To ePublish for Teens” Workshop, when we talk about Angry Birds and the successful business plan behind it, one of the main questions asked is where can one develop free apps online.  There is a plethora of sites.  We posted two sites on our Facebook page, that provide a detailed step-by-step process.

For all of the students who read our blog, we thank you and appreciate all your input.  However, please do not utilize any of the free app, free publish websites alone if under 18 years of age.  Have some fun and create with a parent or parent’s approval…be smart and safe!

May we seek knowledge in all things,

Denise and the entire Unlock the Teacher LLC Team 🙂

Thank You for All the Support of Literacy Campaign in March

Stay Tuned~Unlock the Teacher LLC is Launching Three New Books in April

As March is coming to an end, the Unlock the Teacher LLC team wanted to make sure that everyone knows just how grateful we are for all the support of our eBooks being sold online at Barnes and Noble

Phonics Friends has been the hottest seller, with All Around Our Town and Katie’s Farm Adventures catching up quickly.  This is wonderful because ALL proceeds generated from the last two books, goes towards two schools and their efforts to promote literacy.

We are working on our calendar of events for next school year now.  If you or your school would like to have us come in and provide one of the many workshops we offer, please let us know so we can pencil you in. 🙂

Please check out our website for additional information: www.unlocktheteacher.com

We love hearing from you and sharing your ideas too.  We are creating a massive resource section on our website for educational and non-profit grants.  We will be launching this information in April.  If you or your school has a great Best Practice to share or is in need of information, we would love to hear from you.  It is through the sharing of knowledge and positive collaboration, that we will create a better tomorrow for our children, our future!

May we seek knowledge in all things,
Denise 🙂

Regardless if we are working  in a public or private school, everyone is talking about budget cuts.  One of our goals at Unlock the Teacher LLC is to help find resources for those who play a role in the life of a child.  As an educator myself, I know how hard it is to want to stay current, learn new strategies and to have a toolbox of resources to use in the classroom with students and out of the classroom to help create engaging differential lessons.  The following article contains  a list of free webinars I found interesting and educational.  I pulled these webinars from two of my favorite educational sites: PBS Teachers LIVE! and ASCD..Learn.Teach.Lead.  One new find that might prove to be a beneficial resource is Thinkfinity, a Verizon sponsored site.
