Great Summer Sites to Utilize for Learning Recommended by MACUL

Hello Everyone,

Below are some great sites to utilize for summer learning!

Engage Your Child  in Active Summer Reading

Gobstopper is a free tool for assigning, aonitoring and leveraging summer reading in the classroom. As students read, they will see questions and get feedback, and they can stay motivated by earning badges. Teachers can use the tool to assign books, check on students’ progress throughout the summer and even benchmark data on students’ mastery of Common Core Standards before the start of the new school year. The tool can be used on all devices that have a browser and Internet access.

Challenge Children to Find the Location

GeoSettr helps you create your own GeoGuessr games. When you visit GeoSettr, you will see two screens: the one on the left displays a map with a Pegman; the one on the right, the Street View imagery for the Pegman’s current location. Move the Pegman around, and zoom in if you like, until you find the location that you want students to guess. When you’ve chosen the location, click “set round” to save the location. After you’ve set five rounds (locations), your game is assigned a URL that you can distribute to students. When they play your GeoSettr game, students use the visual clues in the Street View imagery to guess the location. After making a guess, students see the correct location and its distance from their guess.

Let Your Fingers Do the Hiking

Fotonautsfree Fotopedia National Parks app for the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch lets users explore all 58 National Parks in the United States—from Acadia to Zion, including Yosemite, Yellowstone, Grand Canyon and Glacier National Park—a journey that would require several years. Users will first discover the diversity of the national parks through a selected set of 1,500 photos; then they can dive into specific parks to find even more photos. The collection includes 3,000 stunning photos by the renowned professional photographer QT Luong, along with photo-stories based on the images of the national parks. In addition, each image is linked to a related Wikipedia entry. The app is available in 10 languages.

See It in 3-D

AndAR Model Viewer is a free Android app that is capable of displaying 3-D models on Augmented Reality markers. The goal is to help young students better understand the differences between shapes such as cones, cubes and squares, a Common Core math requirement. It helps build students’ spatial reasoning—they can zoom in on these objects and interact with them in the virtual space—and it gives students an understanding of what these objects look like in real life.

See Mathematics in Action

The National Museum of Mathematics (MoMath) opened in New York City in 2013. The museum’s exhibits and programs aim to stimulate inquiry, spark curiosity and reveal the wonders of mathematics. As part of its commitment to provide engaging, interactive mathematical experiences, MoMath has created Math Midway, a hands-on traveling exhibition that highlights the engaging and playful nature of mathematics. The Math Midway is making appearances at science and technology centers across the country.

Assemble a Geometric Paper Torso

Australian architect and paper artist Horst Kiechle recently constructed a geometric paper torso complete with modular organs, including lungs, intestines, kidneys, pancreas stomach and more. The piece was made for the Science Lab of the International School Nadi, Fiji. On completion of the model, Kiechle launched an extensive website with free downloadable templates you can print and assemble, along with photographed step-by-step instructions for every piece.

Explore the Himalayan Glaciers

GlacierWorks, Microsoft and mountaineer/filmmaker David Breashears have collaborated to develop Everest: Rivers of Ice, a new interactive site that takes visitors on a virtual trek to Mount Everest base camp. Virtual travelers make eight stops along the way to base camp. At each stop, they can explore panoramic images of valleys and glaciers. After completing the virtual trek, they can compare the size of Himalayan glaciers in the 1920s to the size of those same glaciers today. GlacierWorks’ mission is to document, educate and raise awareness about changes to the glaciers in the Greater Himalaya through art, science and exploration.

Check Out Two Great Sites for Creating Free Apps

We love sharing the good in education, together we can make a difference!

“Like” Unlock the Teacher on Facebook and while your visiting our new page, check out two new sites we found for creating FREE apps.  When we travel into middle and high schools to teach our “How To ePublish for Teens” Workshop, when we talk about Angry Birds and the successful business plan behind it, one of the main questions asked is where can one develop free apps online.  There is a plethora of sites.  We posted two sites on our Facebook page, that provide a detailed step-by-step process.

For all of the students who read our blog, we thank you and appreciate all your input.  However, please do not utilize any of the free app, free publish websites alone if under 18 years of age.  Have some fun and create with a parent or parent’s approval…be smart and safe!

May we seek knowledge in all things,

Denise and the entire Unlock the Teacher LLC Team 🙂

“The Many Mysteries of the Beach” with an Academic Focus to Hit Barnes & Noble this Week

An Academically Enriched Children’s Literature Book

A “mysterious” narrator takes the reader on many mysteries to be learned at the beach.  Learn about the many animals that live on the beach while enhancing sight words and scientific knowledge.  This book is includes a parent and teacher resource section.  For parents or any caregiver, this is a great tool for exploring the teacher within and creating wonderful teaching moments for the learner in your life.

Book is anticipated to be able to review and purchase by Tuesday this coming week.  The Many Mysteries of the Beach can be downloaded right to your PC or MAC.  If you do not have the application required, Barnes and Noble provides free downloads of their apps to your preferred computer system.

The Many Mysteries of the Beach is  a great tool to have on iPod, iPod Phone or iPad to name a few, while driving in the car or waiting in line at the grocery store.  Have you ever been at the doctor’s office when it was busy, with nothing to occupy your little person’s time?  EBooks are a great tool to engage your reader, strengthen phonetics, sight words and academic vocabulary.  These books takes minimal effort, reduces the need for excess bags, and allows the learner many additional opportunities to read.

Reading is the cornerstone of all learning.  Regardless if the book is hand held and made of paper, or if it is stored on an electronic device, the words open the door to the imagination, not the physical object.

If we are to teach and be effective in the 21st century, then we need to know its language and understand its abilities as a learning tool.  However, with this said, at Unlock the Teacher, LLC we still enjoy curling up and reading a physical book too 😉  One does not have to negate the other, but both methods speak to varied learning styles that might make difference for one reader…and for us, that it worth it alone.   As educators, we were forced out of our comfort zone, which can be a good thing. (This causes our dendrites to fire ;-)…hopefully!) We reviewed many statistics on the integration of technology and learning, and decided to try to meet the needs of all learners in publishing our first few book through ePub.

Technology is here and it is not going away, in fact, it is changing by the minute.  Our goal is to embrace the good aspect of incorporating technology into the learning platform.  We will continually look for ways to help make the learning process authentic and valid for both the teacher and the student.

We appreciate all the support expressed thus far, and hope that within the next few weeks many will check out this book and the others we will be publishing in March.  All proceeds from the books launched in March, National Reading Month, will be donated to individual schools and their literacy funds.

Stay tuned for more information as we launch our website next week 😉  provide a calendar of events for the multiple community workshops we will be teaching, readings and so much more.  We have even been asked, if we would be open to hosting book readings via Skype for home school groups, and the answer is…yes, we would love to 😉 If interested in having us stream in, please email us at denise@unlocktheteacher.com

We have had many schools contact us in regards to the one extra book we would like to donate.  This book is on the many regions and has a social studies and sight words academic focus.  We might even jump on a plane, and come visit one of these schools in Virginia…more information soon.

Please contact us with any questions, concerns or suggestions.  We like to hear from you.

May we continue to seek knowledge in all things,

Denise

Just Purchased a Fantastic New eBook on Amazon: “The Essential iPad Guide for Principals” by Justin Baeder

I just purchased and downloaded  on to my PC, “The Essential iPad Guide for Principals” written by Justin Baeder.  It is informative and a good tool for supervisors in general.  Justin discusses various technological tools that he utilizes that allows him to stay organized and on task for the many roles of an administrator in the 21st century.

Perhaps, I will not share with my husband just yet, and offer it to him as an early Father’s Day gift 😉  He is not an educational supervisor, but I found that the techniques and tools provided in Justin’s book, can be an asset in any supervisor’s toolbox!

Always happy to share the good in edcuation!

Denise 😉
