Unlock the Teacher LLC Gives the First Year Donation to Support Literacy Fund to Local Elementary School

“Katie’s Farm Adventures” an academic eBook

We are happy to report that we were able to give a check to Our Lady Queen of Martyrs School this past month in support of the Literacy Fund.  Last March, we donated one of our Academic eBooks, “Katie’s Farm Adventures” to support the OLQM Literacy Fund.  In April 2011, we went into the school and conducted one of our “Writing Workshops” with Mrs. McMahon’s amazing 1st grade class.  This group of students through a brain-storming exercise, drafted a book idea, wrote the story as a group, colored the pages and published two eBooks for their school’s literacy fund.

“Katie’s Farm Adventures” an academic eBook

Katie’s Horse Adventure” BN ID: 2940013605886

This twenty page book is written and illustrated by 1st graders. It is the third book in the “Katie’s Farm Adventures” Series. All proceeds go to Our Lady Queen of Martyrs School Literacy Fund. The academic focus for this book is sight words. It is a great book for children ages 4-8 that are working on building their cornerstone for reading. It is also a great example of what children can do if only given an opportunity. These students attended a writing workshop from Unlock the Teacher LLC and their teacher Mrs. McMahon learned how to utilize students work to create an eBook and promote literacy throughout their school.

Katie’s Exploring Adventure an academic eBook

Katie’s Exploring Adventure” BN ID: 2940012471550

This 23 page book is written and illustrated by a 1st grade class. “Katie’s Exploring Adventure” is the second book in “Katie’s Farm Adventures” series. In this book, Katie goes on a hike through the woods with her parents and discovers some colorful insects, falls into a huge pile of mud and through it all maintains a great sense of humor and sense of adventure.

All proceeds from these books go towards promoting literacy at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs School at http://www.olqmcatholicschool.org For further information about having your class participate in a “Writing ePublishing Workshop” please contact Unlock the Teacher LLC at or visit our website at www.unlocktheteacher.com.

Given that these books are on sale for $2.99-$3.99 and the school receives 100% of the profits earned from the sale of these academic eBooks (keeping in mind each book profits 65-75% of the value via Barnes and Noble), we are thrilled to be able to continue to see the fruits of our labors as we strive to be the difference in education!

Thank you to all those who support our work in schools, purchase our academic eBooks and share the good in education.

Together we can make a difference!

May we continue to seek knowledge in all things,

Denise

Academic eBooks get Praise from Parents and Teachers…Sneak Peak Inside Five eBooks

We are thrilled with sales of our academic eBooks!  Given the fact that all of our advertising has been word of mouth, we want to say thank you to all our readers and supporters of our work!  Most of the profit from the following eBooks goes directly to promoting literacy in local elementary schools.  We have  received some positive feedback from both parents and teachers.

As we work to finalize the first book in our Unlock the Teacher series for “traditional” publishing, (which we plan to create an app for and publish in multiple languages), we also have two new eBooks coming out by end of summer…which is so soon 🙂

We are immensely grateful and realize, that we would not be able to do what we hope to do, if we did not have your support.

“All Around our Town” to Launch the 1st of March in 2011 for Unlock the Teacher LLC Promoting Literacy Campaign

My community has many beautiful parks.

All proceeds from the eBook for  “All Around our Town”  will be donated to St. Mary’s School in Royal Oak, Michigan.  This school has a wonderful curriculum plan that incorporates art and reading across the curriculum.  The art teachers exhibits a passion for her craft and enjoys showcasing the many beautiful art projects created by her students. The 7th and 8th graders are so well read in this building, I enjoy stopping in to ask them what they are reading and why.  Unlock the Teacher LLC can not wait to see what wonderful ways this building will utilize our gift.

Given that the Common Core State Standards Initiative rolls out in 2012, if your district or school is in need of some curriculum assistance, please visit our website for more information.  We have a proven track record, a workable, teacher friendly model and positive references  from educators, administrators and district level personnel.  Teachers’ most important job is educating our future, our children.  One role we feel at Unlock the Teacher LLC is vital to our mission, is to be a resource for our fellow teachers.  We go in buildings, look at current curriculum, incorporate new CCSS through collaboration and facilitating workshops to allow the educational staff to focus on the learning process  in the classroom.  Many feel that educators should be able to teach eight hours, go home and grade papers for two-four more hours, write lesson plans and somehow find time for their families.  Then, on top of that, we expect them to stay motivated, current and differentiate to meet the needs of all learners.  We are blessed in this country that there are so many educators who are able to do all these tasks and make it work for all stake holders.  However, there are many studies that speak to the high “burn-out” rate for teachers.  Unlock the Teacher, LLC goal is to be a resource for many and an aid to allow educators to focus on what is most important, preparing our children for the future. Wow, I guess I had more in me today then I realized.  I will now jump off my soap box now and encourage everyone to seek knowledge in all things! ~Denise 🙂

“Katie’s Farm” to “Katie’s Farm Adventures” Promoting Literacy Campaign

All Proceeds Dedicated to Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Literacy Fund

My mother named this series of paintings, Katie’s Farm.  Her birth name was Catherine and when she visited her grandparent’s farm, they would call her Katie.  However, given that there is a fabulous story already in print titled Katie’s Farm, we will be modifying title.

We found this to be fitting, given all the amazing adventures Katie enjoys on the farm with her cousins, friends and her favorite horse Sarah.

Thank you again for all the amazing support via email, Facebook and Twitter.  We will keep you posted on details and hope that you will begin the thought process of supporting this literacy campaign, through purchase of books to enhance literacy across the curriculum for all these schools.

Reading is the foundation that supports all learning!

May we continue to seek knowledge in all things,

Grants that Promote Literacy…All it Takes is Effort to Apply

As an ELA teacher, I look for all avenues to promote reading.  If a child shows little interest in reading, then I want to offer one ray of hope, it only takes “one” book to hook a child on reading.  I have seen it over and over in the classroom.  However, the only catch is, it has to be the “right” book.  Ask your child questions, talk and find out what they like. One tool a parent or teacher can use is the Internet.  Utilize Google or another search engine, to find the favorite books for boys at age ten and so on.  It is truly amazing the sheer amount of information one can glean from utilizing a search engine.  There are many blogs solely dedicated to promoting literacy and posting favorite reads.

The following is a list of grants aimed at promoting literacy.  If you need any help or more suggestions for specific grants, ask and we will do our best to find the resources needed.

Read to a child today!

Grants for Reading…Promoting Literacy

Reading Companies who accept grants from non-profit organizations in regards to literacy:

Family Literacy programs funded through the Foundation’s National Grant Program must include reading instruction for parents or primary caregivers, (pre-GED/GED/ESL etc.), literacy or pre-literacy instruction for children, intergenerational activities where the parents/primary caregivers and children come together to learn and to read. www.barbarabushfoundation.com

To qualify for funding, applicants must be a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a valid Internal Revenue Service tax ID.

School grant requests must benefit after-school programs and have a current National Center for Education Statistics school and district registration number to qualify. Proposals between $25,000 and $50,000 may be submitted through the Verizon Foundation website by May 5.

May we seek knowledge in all things,
