A-M-A-Z-I-N-G Things Happening @ Unlock the Teacher

Dear Unlock the Teacher Friends,

I have been offered and accepted a position as Assistant Principal at St. Regis School in Bloomfield Twp, Michigan.  It is a wonderful school and I am thrilled to work in an environment where education is paramount! I am excited to join an educational team where the educators embrace technology and differential learning. I will continue to hold my seat on the Birmingham Public Schools Education Council, where I enjoy discussing curriculum and collaborating with educational leaders and parents in the local area.

My position as CEO at Unlock the Teacher will not change, as we continue to write and develop training for students and teachers.  Trisha, Sue and I will continue to write and plan out new academic eBooks (we are working on three right now) and Sue will continue to create amazing graphics for our clients and produce fabulous commercials. Our next professional development for educators is in  January for one of the BPS Public Schools, topic is “You Make a Difference”.

We are thrilled to announce, that we have completed our 15 month process of writing book I in our series for teachers and parents with Dr. David Lick, MD, Beaumont Hospitals and Dr. Joslen Letscher, Ph.D, University of Detroit Mercy professor. The parent and educator sample group blessed off on our draft and the graphics are AMAZING! We will be sending our proposal out to agents and publishers alike the first week of January before we head to the Writer’s Digest Writing Conference 2012 in New York, Jan. 21-23.  We enjoy this conference for the collaboration that occurs among writers of all genres and the education obtained in the workshops are so beneficial.

We would love to share the good happening in your school, please let us know at denise@unlocktheteacherllc.com.

May we continue to seek knowledge in all things,

Denise

An Unlock the Teacher Update…

As the holidays are upon us, we are working to finalize our proposal draft for book one in the Unlock the Teacher series.  We met tonight and reviewed some modified graphics…they look great!  We are so excited to share the product of so many months of hard work and collaboration. Dr. Lick, with his busy schedule at Beaumont Hospital, has been fabulous with time management and executing the tasks in record fashion.  We are thrilled with his contribution(s) to our book.  Dr. Letscher is knee-deep in grading term papers and is insightful and timely as well.  We are fortunate to be able to work with such amazing people dedicated to their craft and making a difference.

Trisha is doing great and loving her time with Chaston.  How she still finds time to write is amazing to us all. Sue has been working on graphics projects, commercials and still finds time to edit and manage all the many Unlock the Teacher sites and accounts…and I am happy writing away and being grateful to be surrounded with such amazingly bright people, who are honest and kind and care to make a difference in the classroom and in the world.

Stay tuned as I have three great Common Core State Standards blogs coming…I love all the feedback you provide, thank you!

Have a wonderful week.

May we continue to seek knowledge in all things,

Denise

Anti-Bullying Workshops gets Views and Comments…Thank You!

Thank you for reading our blog and as our statistics show, for visiting our Unlock the Teacher website.  In this week alone, we have had over 200 views of our Anti-Bullying Workshops.

The beginning of the school year has been very busy for us and as we continue to go into schools to conduct our ePublishing and Anti-Bullying workshops, we are also working with a few schools currently on CCSS Curriculum Alignment…and if this was not enough to keep us smiling, we have been writing and meeting with our parent and teacher focus groups for our first book that is in its final stages in our Unlock the Teacher series.  Both Dr. Lick and Dr. Letscher have been great  given their tasking schedules, to help put final touches on our work so we can send out to publishers.

Given our schedule the last couple of weeks, we are thrilled with the views and emails coming in requesting information about our Anti-Bullying Workshops…THANK YOU!

We worked very hard last year creating student- friendly workshops that would be age appropriate.  We gathered input from parents, teachers and law enforcement (for grades 9-12 workshop) and gathered statistical data to help all stake holders realize just how important it is to talk about bullying, address questions and concerns and provide students with  problem-solving tools and strategies in bullying situations.

Please feel free to contact us to ask questions, provide input or feedback or to request letters of recommendations.

Thank you for your continued support, together we can make a difference!

May we continue to seek knowledge in all things,

Denise

Book Proposal Getting Ready to Fly and Positive Comments from Focus Groups Leave us Hopeful for Book I in the Unlock the Teacher Series

Book Proposal Getting Ready to Fly and Positive Comments from Focus Groups Leave us Hopeful

for Book I in the Unlock the Teacher Series

It is an exciting time, as our first “traditional” book proposal will be sent out before the first of the year.  We have worked on this book for over a year and we have been writing and collaborating with Dr. David Lick, Director of Family Medicine Troy Beaumont and Dr. Joslen Letscher, Professor at the University of Detroit Mercy.

We have conducted our third Needs Assessment with another group of parent and educational leaders.  Their feedback was amazing and we gleaned a lot from their input…it gave us much hope for this series of books.

Given the parent and educational leader’s input, we now have a clear direction of target audience. Comments for our book design has been quite positive and we listened to group one and two of our first Needs Assessments and feel we have created an educational tool that will be well received for parent and teacher.

Dr. Lick has offered amazing input throughout this process and I know parents and teachers are just going to appreciate and enjoy his comments in the “Dr. Corner”.

Stay tuned…I will blog here about the wonderful process of submitting book proposals traditionally, and all that this process entails.

However, while you wait, please check out any of our academic eBooks at http://www.barnesandnoble.com/c/denise-ball

A couple of our academic eBooks are donated to local schools and helping to promote literacy; all profits from these books go directly to the school.  Together we can make a difference!

May we all continue to seek knowledge in all things,

Denise

Professional Development for Teachers=Inspiration for Trainer

We Conducted a Workshop for Teachers Before Students Arrive Next Week...Inspiring!

We conducted our first professional development for the 2011/2012 school year.  We were honored to be asked back by a school we had worked with all last year, with one of our year-long curriculum alignment packages. They worked so hard to align their curriculum as a building. We visited their school three times last year to discuss the Common Core State Standards, met with teachers one-on-one to discuss individual classroom curriculum that we had been working on via email and conducted grade-level curriculum meetings to ensure that the entire building was on the same page.  As a curriculum developer, I was very impressed with their dedication to their profession and their work ethic to make sure that their building’s curriculum was appropriately scaffolded to maximize learning potential.

So it was with great joy we accepted their invite to come in and give a two and half hour motivational workshop…what a fun way to kick of the year for them and for us!

This dedicated staff allowed me to push them out of the box with some collaborative “hands-on” exercises and impromptu sharing. I think I enjoyed it as much as they said they did. I truly love to see teachers get excited about collaboration and willingness to learn from one another. It was a great way to start our year off at Unlock the Teacher too.  Sometimes we get so consumed by our writing and curriculum alignment projects, that  when we conduct our professional development and student workshops, we are reminded of why we are choosing to do what we do.

We look forward to meeting new teachers and principals this year.

We are excited to share that we are talking with app developers for some of our material and we will be sending off our proposal for Book I in our Unlock the Teacher series, that we are collaborating with Dr. David Lick, Director of Family Practice, Beaumont Hospital, and a Professor at Wayne State and Oakland University Beaumont Medical School, and Dr. Joslen Letscher, Professor at the University of Detroit Mercy.  We have an exciting year ahead and are thankful for all the community support we have received.

As last year, and in keeping with who we are, we will be looking for one or two schools to work with and donate our time and talent with writing and ePublishing workshops.  Please let us know if your school would like to be considered by emailing us at teachme@unlocktheteacherllc.com or by visiting us at our website and leave a comment at www.unlocktheteacher.com To contact me directly, email me at denise@unlocktheteacherllc.com

We wish all those who play a role in the life of a child to have a year full of many learning discoveries!

May we continue to seek knowledge in all things,

Denise

Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and Student Workshop Responses Have Been Great…Thank You!

Response to our Common Core State Standards Workshops has Been Amazingly Successful…Thank You!

Unlock the Teacher workshop pictures in schools for the 2010/2011 School Year

Although we worked in schools this past school year 2010/2011 to help align building curriculum to the Common Core State Standards , since we posted our workshops to prepare our calendar for next school year, the response has been amazing!  We are thrilled with the response and inquiring emails are great…we are happy to answer any questions and we work with all schools to include but not limited to public, private and charter.

On this blog alone, we are averaging 40-100 views a day for our workshops and our subscriptions for our blog have doubled.

As we continue to prepare for next year’s schedule, we are also finishing up a few academic eBooks.

We are also finishing up a year’s worth of research, needs assessments and writing…many months of collaborating with  Dr. David Lick, Associate Professor, Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine and Assistant Clinical Professor, Wayne State University School of Medicine and Dr. Joslen Letscher, Professor at the University of Detroit Mercy.  We are hoping to send proposals to publishers for this project in September.

Outside of our Common Core State Standards Workshops another hot topic of inquiry from our readers is our Anti-Bullying Workshops.  Brief examples of these workshops will be posted soon.

The positive responses from educators has been so rewarding, as they are my colleagues. To have such great emails commenting that you like what we are trying to do is very humbling and synergistic.

We appreciate all the emails, comments and questions.  We are also trying to write grants now to be able to provide workshops for those schools who have asked but cannot afford it for their staff or students.

Thank you!

May we continue to seek knowledge in all things,

Denise and the Unlock the Teacher Team

Unlock the Teacher LLC to Collaborate with Dr. David Lick from Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine

I had a F-A-B-U-L-O-U-S meeting today with Dr. David Lick, from Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine, Director of Family Practice. He is collaborating on our new series of academic books for parents and children. He loved the vision for the series and the direction we would like to go.

We discussed great ways to give back to our community for a truly positive synergistic effect. This will be an incredible and rewarding collaboration! These books will be a great resource for Headstart and Title I programs and we hope to offer them in different languages.

Dr. Lick also asked if he could utilize our already published academic eBooks in his Beaumont office(s) and a clinic they support in the city.  This is a wonderful example of what we can accomplish when we come together for no other purpose than the greater good for our children, our future!

Stay tuned as we start to reveal bits and pieces of this wonderful project…

Our series will be written by Denise Ball and Trisha Vaughn. Collaborators include  Dr. Joslen Letscher, Ph.D. from the University of Detroit Mercy and Dr. David Lick, Director Family Practice, Beaumont Hospital. Design provided by Sue Atwell and some adaptations by Katie Hall, art student in Orlando, Florida.

“Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their work: If one falls down, his friend can help him up. But pity the man who falls and has no one to help him up! Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.”

King Solomon

I feel blessed indeed to be supported by and collaborate with such amazing individuals who are willing to share their time and talent for our children!

Denise 🙂
